After a 2-0 start this year, it's safe to say that expectations are beginning to grow. But a huge win over FCS Richmond and a one-point win over a Penn State squad that probably would have prevailed with me as its kicker don't necessary catapult the Cavaliers into the elite section of college football. A road win over a favored Georgia Tech squad would help them move in that direction and would set up an intriguing battle with No. 16 TCU.
Georgia Tech is ground-dominant offensively, chewing up a ton of clock in the process. They’ve scored more than 23 points just once against FBS competition this season and have really stiffened up defensively in recent contests. Virginia is flat out bad on offense, but their defense has shown glimpses of being competitive. Before their last 2 games, the Cavaliers were allowing fewer than 20 points per game.
Virginia also enjoyed an off week last weekend, but they didn’t feel the way that GT felt about themselves during that time. The Cavaliers have dropped 3 in a row, including at home to a below-average Louisville squad their last time out, and have yet to secure a conference victory in 2022. Virginia’s defense hasn’t been great, but their offense has been absolutely atrocious. They’ve scored more than 20 points just once this season and that was all the way back in Week 1 against Richmond. The Cavaliers are also up to 15 turnovers on the year and are averaging just 4. 8 yards per play in conference games.
So far in the season, the dynamic senior has let the ball fly 26 times for 257 yards, two touchdowns and an ugly interception and tucked it in to run 28 times for 160 yards and a TD. The less that Washington has to throw, the better off that Georgia Tech will be. Key Matchup: Georgia Tech's Run Game vs. Virginia's Run DIn case you were wondering just how much the Yellow Jackets like to run the ball on offense, let this stat tell the story:So far this season, Georgia Tech has run the ball on 75. 34 percent of its plays (fifth most in the country).
The Yellow Jackets, on the other hand, are looking for a real evaluation after dropping a Week 1 heart-breaker at Virginia Tech. They looked much better than anticipated in their three-point overtime loss to the Hokies but didn't get a chance to really continue that momentum against Presbyterian, which they clobbered 59-3.
Georgia Tech Athletics: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets The Virginia Cavaliers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets go to battle on Saturday in an early-season ACC matchup. Both teams have looked strong to start
And that's still less than the Yellow Jackets want. The key to Virginia pulling off the upset is simple. How effectively can the Cavaliers, who have allowed just 2. 9 yards per carry so far this season, slow down Georgia Tech's triple option and force Tevin Washington to throw the ball? PredictionThe answer to that question: Not very. I like Virginia's linebackers, but Georgia Tech is a different beast than they have faced so far this year.

This week, we will get to see the real Georgia Tech. Virginia Player to Watch: Steve Greer, LBHe very well may have the most boring name in college football, but Steve Greer is in for all the excitement that he can handle on Saturday afternoon. The senior linebacker used his Bugs Bunny-like ability to be in about seven different places at once when he racked up 15 tackles and two sacks last week against Penn State. Against Georgia Tech's run-run-and-run-some-more style of offense, he might just have to double those numbers if Virginia is going to slow down the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech Player to Watch: Tevin Washington, QBWashington lines up behind center (usually), so he's technically listed as a quarterback, but when it comes down to it, he's just a running back trapped in a quarterback's body.

The Yellow Jackets won 2 in a row before heading into their bye last weekend with both being fairly solid victories (at Pittsburgh, vs Duke). Now with some fresh and rested bodies, the Georgia Tech defense should once again have another strong outing. They’re allowing fewer than 23 points in their last 3 games and have performed extremely well against the pass all season (208. 5 yards allowed per game).

Virginia vs Georgia Tech: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Radio, Game Time and MoreKevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe Virginia Cavaliers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets go to battle on Saturday in an early-season ACC matchup. Both teams have looked strong to start the year. Virginia sits at 2-0 after destroying Richmond and escaping from last Saturday's duel with Penn State with a 17-16 win, thanks to a mistake—or four—from the Nittany Lions place kicker. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, is 1-1 following a disappointing yet fortifying loss at Virginia Tech and its disposal of Presbyterian.
They have covered just twice in their last 10 outings. Georgia Tech appears to have figured something out in recent weeks as they own a perfect 3-0 record ATS in their last 3 games. Virginia struggles to stop the run (90th in FBS), and GT should take full advantage of that considering that’s the strength of their offense, especially recently (412 rushing yards in last 2 games). Stick with the Yellow Jackets in this one. Georgia Tech -3 available at time of publishing. Playable to Georgia Tech -5.
